An app that lets a landlord judge you based on your private social media
Now we are fully aware of how difficult can be for both landlords and tenants with the news full of rogue landlords and rogue tenants. Now an app has been invented that will scroll through your private social media accounts and make a mathematical judgement as to whether you are a suitable tenant. Is this big brother gone mad? We potential tenants now starting filling their profiles with posts to aid their references.
Tenant assured are developing an app that will provide a referencing service which hopes to comb through any prospective tenant’s social media to pass judgement on whether you’re likely to pay up on time or wreck the place.
Once the service is up and running, it won’t just be limited to your public declarations on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, it will be able to scrape everything you post on your private pages. Now is this a step too far, are we asking people to sign contracts under duress? Or will it just sneak in unnoticed and people will just accept it as being the norm?
Could any potential tenant fool the app? There is enough social media software out there to allow anybody to create and post whatever content they desire. I know when facebook first started business owners would have a business profile and a personal profile will this be the case for the tenant of the future?
Co-founder Steve Thornhill said he feels it’s important to ‘take a deep dive into private social media profiles’.
The developers planned to use language processing software to gauge how often people used words like ‘loan’, ‘poor’ and even things like ‘pregnant’.
Would-be landlords would then get a report on their prospective tenants’ ‘financial stress level’ as well as their personalities.
Is this a good thing or is it a step in the wrong direction?
